The first step in fixing your report is of course to send
off for your report. The Big Three (see Credit Reporting Agencies {CRA})
are the major companies and if you can correct the information with these
companies, you credit history will be fixed.
Most people have no idea that their credit history is
"Bad" until they try to get a loan, credit card or some other form of
credit. The company that turns you down is required to tell you why and
from what source they collected the information. If you been turned down,
photocopy the statement you receive and send it to the CRA and you are entitled
to a free copy of your report.
Upon receipt of your report, look through the report and
find the adverse information. If the information is wrong, you simply have
to write the CRA back and tell them that the information is incorrect and to
remove it from your files. If the information is correct, the process is
slightly different, but essentially the same.
After you have sent off your response to the CRA, they
are required to investigate each item you challenge. Under the FCRA, a
reasonable time should be allowed and that time is normally considered 30
days. The CRA should contact the agency, store, whatever that provided the
incorrect information, and they must respond to verify the information. If
they do not The CRA is required to remove that item in question from your
files. If the company that provided the information responds then the
information remains on your file. This is where you may need assistance
