Legal Services Corporation
The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is a private, non-profit corporation
established by Congress to ensure equal access to justice under the law for all
Americans. With a bipartisan Board of Directors, appointed by the President and
confirmed by the Senate, LSC receives funds annually from Congress and makes
grants directly to independent local programs that provide civil legal
assistance to those who otherwise would be unable to afford it.
Types of Cases
One in every five Americans is potentially eligible for legal services. The
Corporation itself does not offer legal aid directly. However, an LSC program in
your area may be able to provide you with some assistance. The most common
categories of cases handled by LSC grantees are:
- Family
- Housing
- Income maintenance
- Consumer
- Employment

Restrictions
Certain kinds of advocacy such as class actions and most legislative advocacy
are not permitted, even if the program could use non-federal funds to pay for
them. Under the rules, legal services attorneys cannot initiate or participate
in class actions. They cannot engage in direct or grassroots lobbying on behalf
of their clients, although they may use non-LSC funds to respond to written
requests from officials for information or testimony. They may not represent
certain categories of aliens, or engage in litigation on behalf of prisoners. | |
